For university-community partnerships to succeed, communities must participate as full and equal partners at all stages of the relationship. The Phoenix Project will work to enable nonprofit organizations, community residents and local government to identify projects that advance the economic and social welfare of their community. The Phoenix Project recognizes that this process requires trust and relationships built over time.

In exchange for the infusion of resources, community stakeholders will assist in creating meaningful research and teaching opportunities for students and faculty participants by sharing their knowledge and experience, data and time. Furthermore, selected nonprofits will be asked to consider Phoenix Project students and alumni for future employment and service opportunities.

The Phoenix Project commits to providing its community partners with a workforce well-prepared for the tasks at hand as well as a central point of access to university resources often lost in the complicated landscape of academic institutions.

The Phoenix Project seeks the support of governmental officials in partner communities and engages local political leaders in its work, including taking on projects for city government that may strengthen the community's economic or social health.
